The lovely Michelle contacted me to make a blogpost on how to keep your skin in the best condition during the summer months. She works at a spa in New York City and wished to share her knowlegde with others about the dangers the sun can have on our skin. Of course I would share her tips! Not only because my skin is a very light shade and it gets sun burned really fast, also because even if your skin may not get sun burned as fast, chemicals in a lot of sunscreens may damage your skin.
She provided me with a list of tips on how to keep your skin in the best condition possible during the hottest months of the year. I am here to share them with you!
Your guide to flawless glowing summer skin
The summer months are here is with it come all the fun things to do. But the sun can be harsh. Therefore it is essential to take care of your skin. Below are helpful tips plus a DIY recipe to get a healthy, beautiful complexion.
1.
A cooler shower is better for your skin in the hot months. Hot showers will most likely make your skin dryer. After a lot of sweating, taking a cool shower helps calm your skin, which in turn decreases breakouts of acne.
2.
Wear a hat when your outside. For full protection go for a brimmed hat -a baseball cap can only give you partial protection from the sun.
3.
Using a body scrub in the shower is one of the best ways to
exfoliate in the summer. Make sure to give extra care where skin is rougher,
like elbows. After showering, finish with an oil or rich body cream.
4.
For a beautiful summer complexion, cantaloupe is the melon to
use. The fruit is not only delicious; it is full of antioxidants and hydrates
the skin in its own unique way. The result is your skin looks radiant.
5.
Getting bug bites results in itchy and inflamed skin that can
last for weeks. If you get bug-bitten skin, use an anti-itch cream twice daily
until the itching is gone. Use a restorative cream twice daily to get rid of
bug marks.
6.
Strawberries are the best resource for an even skin
tone. Take a large strawberry, cut it in half and poke the flesh to get out the
juices. Spread across your face in circles, leave on for 2 minutes, then rinse
off. Over time, the strawberries can help age and sun spots.
7.
Use plain yogurt as a face mask. Put in on your face for 30
minutes, then take a cool shower and pat dry. The lactic acid has soothing
benefits and calms the skin.
8.
Make sure to use a sunscreen on your hairline. The
skin there is sensitive and can be damaged from UVA and UVB rays. So instead of
a cream, use a sunscreen spray.
Beach Body Scrub
1/2 cup sea salt, finely grained
1/2 cup coffee beans, finely ground
1/4 cup sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon, or 20 drops, eucalyptus essential oil
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. In the shower, massage the
scrub into damp skin firmly. Take your time to get full usage of ingredients.
Rinse off well.
The sun's harmful UV
rays will create discoloring on the skin. However, the body scrub inspired by
the treatments used at Skana Spa– part of New York State Resort, Turning Stone, – they combine the
traditional healing methods of the Oneida Indians to produce an experience that
stimulates inner peace.
